Chained dog surrendered to Cowichan SPCA

Animal cruelty charges being pursued

A dog that was found so emaciated that animal protection officers could not tell what breed she is is now the centre of an animal cruelty investigation in the Chemainus area.
The dog's owners voluntarily surrendered her to the SPCA Monday afternoon after the SPCA received a complaint about the animal's health.
"I went to do a drive-by assessment," said Erica Paul, manager of the Cowichan District SPCA, "and I realized the dog needed immediate attention."
The mostly-white adult dog was chained in the yard and severely malnourished, said Paul.
"I gave her a cookie and she couldn't even keep it down, her stomach is so small," said Paul.
The dog is now being assessed by a local veterinarian and the SPCA is pursuing animal cruelty charges against its owners.
