IS THE SPCA GETTING OUT OF DOG DISPOSAL?

Last month the BC SPCA told AAS that the decision whether to continue with pound contracting will be made in October.

AAS supports the SPCA getting out of the dog-disposal business. It is corrupting and explains why, where SPCA's hold dog-control contracts, there is so much killing, overcrowding, rude, ignorant, hard-nosed employees, and so much ticketing for irrelevant offences like not having a dog licence, and so little interest in preventing cruelty.

We have been saying for two years that the SPCA cannot change as long as it holds dog-control contracts. It may hold more than one hundred throughout the province (it won't tell us the number). These contracts are nothing more than dog-disposal for bucks.

It's true that as long as society allows dogs to be bred and sold with no controls, someone has to dispose of the ruined and rejected - but it should not be a Society that claims to love animals; the contradiction is a conflict of interest led to the need for all the hypocritical lying and secrecy by the SPCA that has been exposed in the last two years.

Animal control should be done by muncipalities so that animal lovers can go directly to their elected officials and complain and make change and can find out how much money is being spent on what and who. There was no way to do this with the SPCA - it was a Secret Society.

Municipalities must run their own dog-control, even if it costs taxpayers more. The reason the SPCA was able to contract relatively cheaply is because of low operating costs: bare bones grim "shelters" (like the Maple Ridge SPCA that Brigitta describes) and all the killing of animals that didn't sell.

In February of 2000, AAS went to the District of North Vancouver, showed it all our proof of SPCA deceit and barbarity, and asked it to stop contracting with the SPCA and to run its own pound and dog control. We were successful, and this January the SPCA was gone and a new District shelter was up and running. AAS also was instrumental in urging the City of Coquitlam to do the same.

We don't believe that the SPCA has acted out of true concerns for animal welfare for at least fifty years and we don't believe that it will now. We believe that the SPCA saw the writing on the wall and will get out of pound contracting because it is ruinious to its own future fortunes to stay in the dog disposal business. Thanks to the internet providing information and a forum, intelligent women are at last forming a network to publicize SPCA pound-contracting atrocities so - the jig is up!

The old agenda was self-serving and we believe the new agenda is self-serving, even if in a way that is more acceptable to us. But the trouble is that self-serving cannot be trusted - it must always be watched, and that is what this web will do.
