New York State Budget Includes Funding for Pet Dealer Law! Thanks Due To Advocacy Brigade Members for Securing Pet Dealer License Law Funding.

Thanks to the assistance of thousands of Advocacy Brigade members in New York who contacted legislators and the Governor, the state budget, which passed on May 16th, includes funding needed to start implementation of "The Pet Dealer Consumer Protection and Animal Care Standards Act". $400,000 is allocated in the budget for the inspection and licensing portion of the program, which will take effect on July 1st of this year.

The law requires that "pet dealers" be licensed and inspected in order to do business in New York. "Pet dealers" include pet stores that sell dogs and cats to the public as well as "backyard breeders" who either breed and sell or just sell more than nine dogs or cats each year to the public for profit. Information identifying pet dealers in your part of the state should be forwarded to the Department of Agriculture and Markets [(518) 457-3880] the agency with responsibility for enforcing the law.
