Fundraiser helps save animals from becoming alligator snacks
CHBC News, Kelowna: Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Rabbits and guinea pigs donated to a local reptile refuge have been saved from becoming snack food following the coordinated effort of local animal rescue groups. Now they’re looking for the public’s financial help to pay for the liberation.

CrocTalk in Kelowna was being overrun when the donated animals began to breed out of control. Owner Doug Illman couldn’t bring himself to serve them up as dinner for Lucy, Alli and Lucky, the American alligators with the larger appetites.

Illman requested help from the local chapter of the Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team (CDART) who brought in volunteers from the Responsible Animal Care Society (TRACS).

The group had the bunnies examined and spayed and have fixed the male guinea pigs and made nine babies available for adoption.

A Flemish giant rabbit was retained and given sanctuary at CrocTalk.

A fundraiser BBQ and yard sale to pay for the spaying and neutering of the rabbits and guinea pigs is set for Saturday, September 25th at CrocTalk, 4493 Stewart Road East, Kelowna.
