Petition: Ask Obama to Send Pardoned Turkeys to Farm Sanctuary *LINK* *PIC*

For more than 40 years, the president of the United States has upheld an annual tradition of pardoning turkeys once intended for slaughter around the Thanksgiving holiday. Sadly, despite the gesture of compassion, the good fortune of these birds doesn’t always last for very long.
Commercially-raised turkeys like those pardoned by the president are selectively bred to grow extremely large and fast, painfully de-beaked and de-toed, raised in crowded, filthy conditions, and fed diets designed to make them gain more weight. As a result, these birds are prone to serious health issues and require special care to thrive. Since 2005, the pardoned turkeys have become theme park attractions at Walt Disney World or Disneyland, where many have died within one year. At Farm Sanctuary, turkeys are able to enjoy a more natural existence, and live happily and comfortably within a flock for many years.
Turkeys are intelligent, sensitive animals deserving of our respect and careful consideration, not attractions to keep on display. Since 1986, Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey Project has saved the lives of countless turkeys and educated millions of people about their plight on factory farms. Take part in this critical campaign by helping us give this year’s pardoned turkeys something they can truly be thankful for. Please sign our petition and urge President Barack Obama to join us in starting a new holiday tradition by sending them to Farm Sanctuary!
We must collect signatures and submit this petition by November 15 to be heard in time, so please sign now and ask everyone you know to do the same.
And, if you haven’t done so already, please also join us in spreading compassion along with Ellen DeGeneres, our 2010 Adopt-A-Turkey Project spokesperson, by sponsoring a rescued Farm Sanctuary turkey for the holidays. Learn more about this lifesaving program and “adopt” a feathered friend today!
Thank you for your compassion,
