Update on the battle for governmental oversight of the Ontario SPCA

Hello everyone!

12 more petitions calling for governmental oversight of the Ontario SPCA were read publicly this past week, bringing our total to 42 petitions read since September 13th. THAT IS UNPRECEDENTED!!!!

However, seeing that 2,000 petitions were hand delivered to 101 MPPs and only 18 MPPs so far have read a petition, we have a lot of work to do. Click here to see the list: http://www.ontla.on.ca/web/house-proceedings/petition_status.do?locale=en Call and email your MPP to read a petition. November 18th is just around the corner.

It’s my pleasure to add three Liberal MPPs to our list of responsive, respectful MPPs. Noteworthy this week is the Honourable Steve Peters, Speaker of the House, MPP (Elgin--Middlesex--London). Ministers are not able to read petitions. They can however ask another MPP to read a petition on their behalf. MPP Peters asked MPP Hardeman to do the honours. Mr. Hardeman, who by the way has already read five petitions, stood up and spoke these words: “I have a petition here signed by a great number of people from the great riding of Elgin–Middlesex–London, represented by the Speaker, who is unable to read the petitions. On his behalf, I’d like to read it into the record. It’s a petition to the Parliament of Ontario.”

These MPPs have done their part. Time for us to thank them. Please send an email and remember to copy in the party leaders and Minister Bradley.

A disturbing trend is manifesting itself amongst Liberal MPPs. Rather than publicly read petitions, these eight Liberal MPPs chose to “table” a petition; the easy way out! This means petitions from their ridings are not part of the official Hansard record. The will of the people of Ontario is to have these petitions publicly read. Anything less is unacceptable. The Newmarket “ringworm” shelter which has been closed to the public since May 11, 2010, is in the riding of Dr. Helena Jaczek. Dr. Jaczek assures her constituents she supports the “intent” of the petition. She has in fact “tabled” TWO petitions, yet she refuses to publicly read this petition. Please email your comments to the MPPs below ASAP. Copy in the party leaders & Minister Bradley. Let them know it’s an election year. We are watching and we are VERY displeased.
