Six years ago, in Duluth, Minnesota Troy Gentry of country music duo Montgomery Gentry killed a tame black bear he purchased from Marvin Greenly, and claimed he killed the animal in the wild. Today the organization Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) released the YouTube videos procured from the US Fish and Wildlife Service after the law firm of Meyer Glitzenstein and Crystal challenged the government agency under the Freedom of Information Act.

In 2004, Gentry paid Marvin Greenly $4,650 for a 600 pound tame black bear with dental problems named "Cubby." Greenly owned the Minnesota Wildlife Connection where people could photograph wild animals that had been domesticated. Gentry actually filmed himself shooting the bear with a bow and arrow in a small pen surrounded by an electrical fence and made believe he hunted the bear in a dangerous wild situation. Greenly shot Cubby in the lungs; according to Steve Hindi, President of SHARK, an especially cruel way for an animal to die as the animal literally drowns in their own blood.

Also known as "shooting preserves" or "game ranches" canned hunts are private hunting facilities that offer wealthy clients an opportunity to kill exotic or large animals trapped within enclosures. Many of these animals come from private breeders, zoos, or animal dealers, and for the most part the animals have been cared for and fed by humans so have little or no natural fear of people. At many of the facilities, the animals are regularly fed by humans, and shooters can be hiding at feeding time and kill the animal.

Most hunting clubs shun this practice because it does not comprise a "fair chase." As defined by the Boone and Crockett Club, a "fair chase is an ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper advantage over such animals."

In November,2006 Gentry plead guilty to the misdemeanor charge of falsely registering a captive bear as killed in the wild. In exchange federal prosecutors dropped charges that he violated the Lacey Act which bans possessing or transporting illegally obtained wildlife.

Gentry told the court that he purchased the bear and planned to videotape the hunting and killing of Cubby. "Lee and I made a deal about harvesting this bear," Gentry admitted. He also made an agreement to lie to the authorities and state the animal was killed in the wild outside of Sandstone, Minnesota instead of on Greenly's property.

Lee Greenly plead guilty at the same hearing as Gentry and was charged with two felonies for assisting other hunters to kill bears at illegal baiting stations that he was believed to have maintained inside the national wildlife refuge in Minnesota.

Gentry was sentenced to three months probation, $15,000 fine and gave up hunting privileges in Minnesota for five years. As part of his plea agreement, he had to forfeit the bear, the bow and arrow he used to kill the bear. Those had been part of a taxidermy display at Gentry's home in Tennessee.

The animal rights group Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) finally won a three year lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over the release of a videotape of country singer Troy Gentry participating in a canned hunt.

In 2004, Troy Gentry, of the band Montgomery Gentry, killed a tame bear named Cubby at the Minnesota Wildlife Connection, in Sandstone, MN owned by Lee Greenly.

Greenly used animals on his preserve for wildlife photography. Unfortunately, when Cubby developed dental problems, Greenly decided to sell Cubby to Gentry for $4,650, rather than pay for any additional expenses Cubby’s healthcare would incur.

Gentry proceeded to shoot Cubby with a bow and arrow from a baited tree stand inside of Cubby’s pen, a one-acre fenced enclosure with an electrified fence. Afterward he turned to the camera and said, “”We’ll let him lay there a little bit, make sure he bleeds out good. It has been a long hunt. Had two beautiful days.”

While Cubby, who had been hit in the lungs was drowning in his own blood, Gentry added, “Wow! What an experience. This is awesome.” All the while lying to the camera playing some delusional role to make himself out to be some manly sportsman conquering the wild.

In 2006, Gentry struck a deal and plead guilty to falsely registering a bear as wild. He was fined $15,000 and received three months of probation. He also had to hand over Cubby’s stuffed body and the bow he used to kill him. In exchange, charges that he violated the Lacey Act, which bans possessing or transporting illegally obtained wildlife, were dropped.

Greenly faced two felony charges of aiding hunters to illegally kill bears at baiting stations, which could have resulted in five years in prison for each count, a $400,000 fine and forfeiture of his all terrain vehicles. He plead guilty, but somehow got off with only probation.

The videotapes of the kill were finally released this week under the Freedom of Information Act.

This is the video Troy Gentry and the US Government never wanted you to see.

Troy Gentry, of the country music duo Montgomery Gentry, arranged to fire arrows into a tame bear named Cubby, and to then claim he had hunted a wild bear.

Gentry even had his ruse video documented. When the US Fish and Wildlife Service learned of the case, Gentry and his accomplice Lee Marvin Greenly were charged with felonies. This video is part of the evidence against Gentry and Greenly.

The story made nationwide news, but only now do you get to see just how low Troy Gentry can go.
