Debbie I am extremely sorry for your loss. I read your story a couple of days ago and had so many thoughts going through my head.

Quote: My 2 kids went to the SPCA and spent an hour with her before they killed her and she was jumping and wanting to go home and I just didn't have the money....we were crying and begged to take her home. OMG we miss her soooo much.
Families on limited incomes just have their pets killed...... how sad for those children... money doesn’t make you have more love!! We are still crying.....................

That breaks my heart to read. And this is what the BCSPCA calls "animal welfare". Oreo had a loving home. Why oh why didn't the SPCA try to help this family? Now isn't that a question?? Being the largest Animal Welfare organization they must know of rescue groups who, like AAS, would have paid for the dental work. That could have possibly helped both a dog and a person, but the SPCA killed the dog and broke the hearts of a loving family. My honest take on the situation: Oreo was OLD and deemed unadoptable so of no value to the SPCA which equals a death sentence. Doesn't matter there is a loving family "still" able to give Oreo a wonderful home. Oreo's family's only fault was they were low income which the SPCA could care less about. How can a non charity be so heartless when at the same time it's supposed to be compassionate and be a voice for the voiceless?

I'm not understanding about the teeth. Oreo was picked up twice in a couple of months. Did Oreo's teeth get bad within a month? Most likely not. Who is the SPCA to say that Debbie wouldn't have been able to find the money without giving her a chance? She complied the first time and presented the vet bill. Why did they not ask her to comply again and then do follow up? Isn't that what they do with all the puppymillers out there? Ask them to comply. Oh, but I forgot Oreo is one dog, not many, and won't attract thousands in donations for another heroic SPCA "rescue". The public must be told how heartless the SPCA is for it to decide who to donate to.

My Ziggy apparently was around 3 years old when dropped off at the Nanaimo SPCA in very bad condition. I was told by the SPCA that there was a waiting list for little dogs. Guess because he was such a mess the list became short and I was called because of my interest. After paying to buy him I then headed right to my vet. One of the first things needing to be addressed were his terrible teeth, among many, many other health issues. But Ziggy was only three years old and although a mess he was deemed adoptable. His age saved him and yes he was deserving to live a full life. Oreo's teeth were probably far less an issue than all of Ziggy's issues but Ziggy went on to have six wonderful years with me. Oreo you so deserved to LIVE. Rest in peace little one and run free.

My wee Ziggy...
