My bad experiences with the SPCA and loose dogs I have rescued

What city in the Lower Mainland does have after hours animal control?

A few months ago as I was on my way to work at 6 am, a dog ran out onto the road, it was frightened and ran back to the side of the road. I stopped and got out and tried to call him to me. The dog darted back down the big ditch and into the bushes. I called the SPCA and of course got their recording saying to call the RCMP for dogs at large. I did that and spoke to a woman who said they (RCMP) don't go out for dogs at large. Why then did the SPCA recording specifically say to call the RCMP? The police officer I spoke to said that there was NO after hrs animal control in Surrey. She wished there was and hopefully a concerned citizen would be able to catch the frightened dog and hold it until the SPCA opened and could respond. Even if the SPCA was contacted who knows when they'd show up anyway?

A while back it was 7:30 pm and two dogs ran by my house. One was a pitbull and the other a huge American Bulldog Mastiff Cross. The pittie I couldn't catch, the large dog came to me and I looped a leash around his neck and took him home. I called SPCA emerg after hrs and told them I had this huge dog and pls come get him as my own Boxer didn't like other males and I had an old sick female Boxer and a young child 10 yrs old. NOPE they wouldn't come! Put him in the garage or the back yard I was told by the SPCA. I said to them "You have to come get him, he's huge, if my own dogs and he got in a scuffle it would be awful!"

NOPE they wouldn't come, too busy. So I put my dogs in my bedroom and put the Mastiff Cross in the back yard. He kept coming up the stairs trying to get in the house, it was so sad. After an hr I couldn't stand it and I took him downstairs and put him in a large x-pen with blankets, food and water, toys. I went downstairs every half hr to talk to him and to take him outside for a pee etc. Needless to say my own male was not happy. My husband came home late from work. I had stayed up as I wasn't sure how this dog would react to a strange male......as it turns out NOT GOOD! He saw my husband and growled that low guttural dangerous growl. I was standing beside the x-pen and I told my husband to slowly back-up and go back upstairs and not come back down. This would be about 1 am.

In the morning I again called the SPCA and still they wouldn't come get him. He had no collar or ID or else I would have tried to contact the owners myself as I had done in the past when I find and catch dogs at large. Finally I had to take him down to the Surrey SPCA myself. It killed me to do this because I know that if he wasn't claimed by his owners the SPCA would test and fail and kill him but I had no choice at that time. Luckily the owners had already been looking for him and they picked him up the next day.

So in my experience I have had NO luck or help from the SPCA when I find dogs loose. I have a friend who runs a kennel but she didn't get my message that evening.....I have done that before when I find a loose dog and can't keep it at my house, I take it to her for the night until we can find the owners. So what do we do with no after hr animal control? Try to help ourselves when ever possible, but that can put our own animals and children, ourselves and in my case, my husband, at risk.
