Malta - Less than one day of an extraordinary demonstration against animal cruelty, Star, the mixed-breed dog rescued near Ghar Hasan died. The dog had been shot with a pellet gun in the head 40 times, bound by her paws and muzzle, and buried alive in a shallow grave.

Through an incredible instinct to survive, Star had managed to dig her way to the surface, scratching away the sand from her face - allowing herself to free her face in order to breathe. An animal rescue employee found the dog and brought her to an animal clinic for emergency care. Star was operated on, pellets removed and was slowly recuperating.

Star had been under the constant care of St Francis Animal Welfare Center and had been making an excellent recovery, however a few days ago, she began to throw up. Veterinarians made every effort to save her, but her condition deteriorated yesterday afternoon, and Star died.

Star's egregious experience will not however have been in vain. A call for stricter animal cruelty laws and psychological therapy for animal abusers was the main theme yesterday as the rally will continue to bring awareness and education.

Rest in peace Star. You will be missed.
