Some puzzling and disappointing choices

AAS understands that first the bloated head office staff had to be trimmed. Aside from the crippling expense, it was chaotic and inefficient; it wasn't even capable of producing a simple one page handout on what a dog's physical and social needs are even when staff was increased to thirty-four from nine. The nine had fifty years of very little to do and it wasn't capable either, so it hardly matters how many or how few people worked at the BC SPCA head office, the dismal level of productivity never seemed to change. We only hope that Mr Daniell is going to make people actually produce palpable results.

And we understand why Mr Daniell may not be able to purge bad branch staff, the hard-nosed career killers....yet. Branches cannot be emptied as there is no pool of good employees to hire new employees from. The SPCA is not like any other industry. In other industries there are the competition's employees that can be attracted and hired. The SPCA has an 108 year monopoly; there is no competition and no pool of experienced employees to attract.

If Mr Daniell wants to clean out the career killers, it will take several years of hiring and training and he has to be allowed the time to do this. The question is - does he plan to? It may take a year or more to see if he is going to do it.

It's disappointing that there was no announcement of the dismantling of CAMP and the staff who run it.

Mr Daniell did fire two Regional Managers yet kept one who is a discredit to the SPCA. Cindy Soules was one of the Regional Managers who was fired. Cindy's only agenda has been compassion for animals and she has a wealth of experience and is a hard worker. It's disappointing that Mr Daniell could not find a place for the one person at the SPCA that AAS trusted. Why would the SPCA get rid of a person like Cindy Soules but keep some others who do next to nothing and some who are disliked and mistrusted by many in animal welfare? Puzzling and disturbing.
