Welcome to PETA e-News for the week of August 28, 2003.

Def Jam Founder Russell Simmons Tells KFC: "Listen Up!"
Media mogul and mega-friend to animals Russell Simmons has penned a letter to David Novak, CEO of KFC’s parent company, Yum! Brands, urging him to eliminate the worst abuses suffered by the hundreds of millions of chickens killed for KFC every year.

In his letter, which ran as a full-page ad in the Louisville Courier-Journal, Mr. Simmons points out: "Cruelty is cruelty, whether it’s cruelty to children, to the elderly, to dogs and cats, or to chickens."

How Do You Say "Bird Torture" in French?
Foie gras—or "fatty liver"—is made from the grotesquely enlarged livers of ducks and geese. Workers shove long metal pipes down the ducks’ throats and pump up to 7 pounds of food per day into their stomachs, the equivalent of about 16 pounds of spaghetti in a human being. Find out how you can help birds at GoVeg.com.

Ask Kellogg to Keep Chimpanzee Out of Commercials
The Kellogg Company plans to use a chimpanzee named Charlie in the production of a series of commercials, despite concerns about a cruel industry that tears baby animals away from their mothers and forces them to perform by using electric shocks and beatings. "Retired" chimpanzees and orangutans are sold to biomedical research facilities or to tawdry roadside attractions. Tell Kellogg that you will boycott its products until it scraps plans to exploit great apes

Now Showing on PETA TV: Israel Bans Foie Gras Production!
Israel, until now the third-largest producer of foie gras in the world, has outlawed the horrific practice of force-feeding ducks and geese to enlarge their livers. The late Sir John Gielgud narrates this undercover video exposing the terrible truth behind this "delicacy."
