There never was moratorium on all euthanasia

"Animal shelters across the province were thrown for a loop last week when the BC Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BCSPCA) announced that a moratorium on all animal euthanasia had been placed."

The SPCA is not THAT stupid. It announced a moratorium on killing only for space, but lots of other reasons were still allowed, like aggression and illness. That's what CAMP, hurriedly plastered into place, was all about - proving aggression. That's what the almost useless $200 vet limit was all about - it made a lot of animals too expensive to keep.

Since any animal will be aggressive or ill after being at an SPCA for long, CAMP and the $200 cap effectually left killing for space in place.

“We only have one staff member who is qualified to euthanise animals, and we prefer letting the vet do it because it is very traumatizing. We love animals and we find it very hard to put animals down. It’s just sometimes you just don’t have a choice,” Cryne said. "

The SPCA has ALWAYS had a choice and it chose the pet recycling business over animal welfare. And it got away with it for decades because almost no one understands that unlimited surrender is a bottom line business, not compassion.

The media believes it too. In fact almost everyone believes it. The SPCA is safe as long as most people just keep not thinking.

Cryne is telling the truth when she says, “We were told to try getting more foster homes for animals, increase our advertising for available animals and get more volunteers but the problem is that there are just too many animals. "

There it is, from someone whose knowledge is based on day-to-day fact. The SPCA is still attempting to hang onto its huge pet intake and resale business by spending money on advertising pets for sale instead of spending money to reduce the number of recycled pets by implementing a comprehensive spay/neuter program. And it is staying in the pet disposal business too, by hanging onto its unlimited surrender policy.

It appears from the SPCA's continued use of ad agencies, spin doctoring, and re-imaging techniques instead of true animal welfare, that Ms Cryne will have to go on killing the unwanted for room for a long time to come.
