Today, the Victoria SPCA is so much better

While I haven't been involved in animal rescue for a long time, I have been around long enough to see huge changes happen at the Victoria SPCA.

The Victoria SPCA used to euthanize animals for almost any reason available. It was so bad no one in the rescue community could say anything good about it at all and even the Victoria SPCA Board were questioning the way animal's were being treated.

Today, the Victoria SPCA is so much better. Over the last 18 months incredible changes have happened.
Cats can bathe in the sun in the open-air cat room, they can roam about in the communal rooms and most of the kittens can also play in their own kitten room.
Dogs have two play areas where they can jump in the little play pools, socialize with each other to burn off steam, or just stretch their legs and feel almost free like in a back yard. The dogs receive adequate exercise with good long walks where hopefully they learn to walk well on a leash. Remedial training is provided when possible and training is sought out for problems. Difficult dogs are worked on by volunteers as much as possible to make them re-homeable.

The animals are fostered out as much as possible. Many community volunteers are making the program very successful.
A SOS (Sleep Over and Socialize) program is up and running. This program so helps those dogs which are stressed in a kennel, and the older dogs who cannot understand why they ended up at an SPCA to begin with.

There is always room for improvement but, at the Victoria SPCA today it is not surprising to see an animal or animals in every office, animals at the front desk and employees with smiling faces.

It is frightening how many aspects of a puppy mill can be applied to the average SPCA facility

Manufactured confusion: Can unlimited surrender assist in the process of changing perceptions or does it entrench a culture of irresponsible pet-ownership?
