Help Break California Couple’s Pattern of Abuse

On September 22, California residents Kathy and Reed Carman each pleaded guilty to 11 felony counts and one misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals. The two were charged following a four-month investigation into their reportedly overcrowded and filthy Carmichael business, The Puppy Store. A total of 289 visibly ill puppies-23 of whom later died from parvovirus-were allegedly found crammed into feces- and blood-filled cages and subsequently seized on two separate occasions. Officials also reportedly discovered dead puppies stuffed into garbage bags at both the store and the Carmans’ residence, from which they recovered an additional 28 puppies.

This was apparently not the first time the couple had been found mistreating animals. Over the past nine years, Sonoma County Animal Control officials purportedly responded to more than 40 separate complaints voiced against Kathy Carman. After the couple was arrested on related charges and ordered by the court to neither sell nor possess animals, they were allegedly found transporting more than 40 puppies-again in deplorable conditions-in their van and were again arrested.

Prosecutors, citing the recent case and the couple’s reported history of negligent abuse, have asked that Kathy Carman be incarcerated for three years and four months. Alarmingly, the court has declared that neither Kathy nor Reed Carman will spend more than one year in jail. For more information, click here.

Sentencing by the Honorable Jane Ure is scheduled for October 24. Please urge Judge Ure to take all forms of animal abuse seriously. For more information, click here. Politely ask that she follow the prosecution’s sentencing suggestions, and request that she order the couple to undergo a thorough psychiatric evaluation followed by mandatory counseling at their own expense. Finally, implore her to ensure that the Carmans will never again abuse animals by prohibiting them-once and for all-from all contact with animals, professional or otherwise.
