Animal Advocates Watchdog

This is just a little tongue-in-cheek anticipation of what Craig Daniell might say in his upcoming appearance on the Rafe Mair show

This is just a little tongue-in-cheek anticipation of what Craig Daniell, SPCA Acting CEO, might say in his upcoming appearance on the Rafe Mair show

1. that this was not a raid!!
2. that the SPCA has to act on complaints
3. that he has every confidence in his experienced employees
4. that many problems can be caused by feral cats
5. that the staff say that they were not wearing uniforms
6. that he has every confidence in the person who complained. This person is much respected, as he/she does valuable rescue work
7. that publicising things like this causes harm to the animals as donations may drop
8. that Penny is giving out misinformation
9. that the complaint had merit. He screened the complaint himself as it was submitted directly to him
10. that the SPCA wants to work with local groups
11. that the SPCA needs money to keep afloat
12. that the order was "complied with" as a result of Drever and Eccles' wonderful work- so that's why the order was revoked and that the SPCA will be pleased to cooperate with Penny
13. that a cooperative relationship with the SPCA is enjoyed by most local groups
14. that this was definitely not an attempt to close down Penny's shelter
15. that the words of Drever and Eccles have been misinterpreted

I anticipate that he will try to discuss the good programmes that the SPCA is involved in rather than getting involved with the Forgotten Felines story. There are good things to discuss, such as the work that some of the local shelters are doing. The Home for the Holidays programme seems to have caught on locally. So far about 120 adoptions have been made out of a target of 300. The day to day work with animals in distress has been excellent here in Nanaimo and I think in many other shelters. However the loss of two full-time and three part-time front-line staff here is sad.

What Craig will not say!

1. who complained and why attention was paid to this particular complaint when there are enormous files that have never been responded to ( I have a feeling that somebody quite influential made it)
2. that this could have been an ill-conceived, poorly executed "raid."
3. that feral cats are assets when they are rehabilitated or homed appropriately
4. that his staff appear to have been wearing uniforms and carrying batons.
5. that the complainant's information could have been wrong
6. why he will not answer questions from Penny's lawyers
7. that the order may have been revoked because Penny got a lawyer and is good friends with Barbara Yaffe, or because there were no grounds at all for the complaint.
8. why the SPCA sent cats to Forgotten Felines if things really were so bad
9. that the SPCA probably owes an apology to Penny March for all the grief this has given to her
10. that the veterinarian, Dr. Dhillon, who carried out the part of the order demanding an inspection, gave the Forgotten Feline's facility an excellent grading
11. that this could negatively impact the future relationship with local groups that the SPCA is seeking to expand
12. that Penny does fabulous work according to close associates
13. that this raid cost a lot of money and time - in a questionable cause
