The root of the problem is the human race and prevailing attitudes regarding animals

Building an endless supply of shelters for unwanted pets fails to address the core problem and solves nothing. The root of the problem is the human race and prevailing attitudes regarding animals. Much needs to be done in the way of education, spay/neuter programs, unregulated breeding, and basic understanding on the responsibilities and commitment needed when having a pet.
Unfortunately, in today’s society people want so much and feel entitled to have an animal whether it is appropriate or not. When tired of it, its usefulness is outlived, or it becomes a liability the time comes to rid oneself of the animal. Most often the easiest route is chosen, with little regard as to the future, if any, that the pet will have. As long as there are organizations or facilities available to dump their animal, the cycle will continue. Shelters enable people to believe this is a guilt-free solution, wherein the fact is the supply far exceeds the demand, and the likelihood is that the animal will endure the many stresses of an unfamiliar environment, before succumbing to illness or being killed.
