Animal Advocates Watchdog

Will Kia be the first statistic at the District of North Vancouver's "no-kill" shelter? Not if you can help her....

Dear Friends,

I am appealing to your organisations for the last time about Kia.

Many of you know her, and those who dont, have heard about her, probably from me.

Kia has been at the North Vancouver Animal Shelter since July 2002.

Below is her website, to refresh your memory.

www.adoptkia.tk

I am also attaching the "Adoption Briefing" I have prepared for her.

It goes without saying that a shelter/pound is a terrible place to be for any dog, especially for those who are not fond of other dogs, and are attached to people they love. In my view, Kia is suffering to a great extent from this. The shelter is not doing anything on her behalf, such as aggressive marketing or rehabilitation. Together with some friends of mine we have tried everthing possible individuals could do. We have given her proper exercise, stimulation, and interaction. We have launched several aggressive campaigns to market her, such as newspaper exposure, web site, flyers, word of mouth, contacting relevant organizations and individuals etc. So far nothing worked. Before I was asked to leave the shelter I was involved with her on a daily basis, such as playtime, training, exercise, socialization, stimulation. Now she is without all those, and has been since I had to leave the shelter beginning of September 2003.

I have been informed that the new "Committee for Euthanasia" for shelter dogs is about to be formed. This leaves me to believe that time is not on Kias side. She will be one of the first ones this committee will have a look at; and in my view, rightly so. Most of you know my stand on this one. Incarceration of such length is one of the most cruel, and terrible things for a dog to experience, and death becomes first and foremost a salvation.

If they decide to go ahead with this I will not fight it. If I could see a glimmer of hope, I would.

But before it comes to that I want to make one last plea to the organizations that may have the connections to save her life. Most of you have already been contacted in this regard in the previous two years. But things change, and all I am asking is a last effort to tap into your connections one final time. If cost is an issue I am sure that the newly formed North Shore Animal Foundation [which is the money-raising arm of the Shelter] has enough to cover the cost for a reasonable period of time.

I know I am asking a lot, but I could not live with myself if I didnt. Most of you fight for the big cause. I fight for them one at a time, and this one is about to slip away from me.

Thanks

Ali Yazman
