Greater Vancouver Zoo interviewed on CKNW talk show today

Greater Vancouver Zoo's Animal Care Manger, Jamie Dorgan, was interviewed today by Jennifer Mather. Also on the show was a representative from the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). Mr.Dorgan stated that the zoo is in full agreement with everyone's concerns that their facilities for the hippos are sub-standard, and he went on to say that other animals' living conditions are not what they should be either. He said that people's expectations about how zoos keep animals has changed over the years, and what may have been accepted 20 years ago, is not good enough now. They are continually faced with demands for improved conditions for all of their animals, and they are working on rectifying them as they can afford it. He also said that a new indoor hippo barn with an indoor pool, is what they are now planning to build, hopefully this year. Jennifer Mather then asked the representative from CAZA if they had the power to close the zoo, and the reply was no. All they can do is revoke their accreditation which hinders the zoo's breeding program. Also, losing CAZA's endorsement would be a public relations nightmare for the zoo.
