Vancouver Island wolf cull

Vancouver Island wolf cull
By: Raincoast Conservation Society

In the fall of 2002, Raincoast Conservation Society worked to quash a proposal by British Columbia's Ministry of Water, Land, and Air Protection to kill a significant percentage of Vancouver Island's wolves and cougars. Although the Island-wide cull proposal was defeated, a "limited" cull around marmot colony areas was approved for winters 2003 and 2004. Luckily, 2003 was a very mild winter and trappers were able to kill only a few animals. We are working hard to ensure that this program is stopped as the snow falls in 2004. We are building on a government relations strategy as well as a media campaign to push for the use of non-lethal control alternatives that will safeguard marmots and prevent the culling of wolves, while serving as a model for predator-prey issues in other areas.
