Animal Advocates Watchdog

My letter to the editor of the Lake Cowichan Gazette

While the attack on the young girl is incredibly unfortunate the dog is the only one whom is being held responsible it seems.

The owner of the dog (who is apparently known) is allowed to just walk away and perhaps purchase a new Rottweiler who will undoubtedly be treated again with no apparent regard.

The Town has on its website under Animal Control the comment :
"The Town is now taking a hard-line stance on violent and aggressive dogs, and will not tolerate irresponsible owners. "
Certainly the town is taking the hard-line stance on the dog however no consideration is apparently being given to the manner in which this dog was treated prior to the unfortunate instance and no penalties given to any PERSON involved.

This again is of no benefit to the public at large and provides no education to owners of power breeds at all and absolutely no deterent. Even the mother of one of the girls who was storing the Rottweiler in an abandoned bus bears responsibility but the main responsibility belongs with the owner of the animal who allowed the dog to run stray and injure a person.

Until major penalties are levelled against irresponsible owners absolutely nothing will change.

Yours sincerely,
Carol Sonnex
