Chortyk on the phone to a big ex-supporter

I phoned Michelle Rodgers on Thursday. She told me she was unable to talk at the time but she would call me back. Funny, but about an hour later Lori Chortyk. - Communications person head office SPCA, called me back. She was talking in circles. I told her as an SPCA supporter I had a right to know why this decision was made. She got very upset a few minutes into our conversation and said obviously I wasn't much of a supporter. I told her the City Challenge which just won the Program Excellence Award and has raised over $100,000 in the last 2 years was MY idea and so I feel I'm a pretty big supporter of the animals.

All of a sudden her tone changed and she was trying to explain her situation again - which I know is a bunch of crap but it's amazing how she was trying to be sweet and wording everything she said a bit more carefully!!

The SPCA makes me sick!! There just has to be a way to show the public what they are up to.

Some of the highlights of the conversation with Lorie:

- she said Cheech has lunged at children's throats several times during his time at the SPCA. I asked if there were any lawsuits against the SPCA re this. She said no.

- she said Cheech has viciously attacked several people during his time at the SPCA. I asked if there were any lawsuits against the SPCA re this. She said no. She said that was because they were all SPCA employees that he attacked!

- I asked why Cheech wasn't put to sleep if he had lunged at children and viciously attacked people while at the SPCA. She said they were trying to give him every chance possible!!! (RIGHT!!! If any of this was true he would be long gone!)

- I asked why it had said in his bio that he was great with other dogs and people and getting better all the time. She said that volunteers write the bio. I asked why SPCA staff/management do not check these before they are posted. No answer.

- I asked why it said in the bio that 'Cheech is patiently waiting for you so come down and meet him' She said Cheech was never up for adoption, but it was important for him to meet new people for his rehabilitation. (The bio did not say one thing about Cheech not being available for adoption)

- I asked why a Rescue Group wasn't considered for Cheech. Lori said because even if forms were signed, the SPCA would still be liable if Cheech attacked someone because they know he is a threat to the community! I asked how the decision was made. She said they brought in many experts during Cheech's time at the SPCA. One of the people was an animal welfare behaviourist at UBC, of course there were also a few SPCA people!! I asked if the Cheech's vet was involved. She said no.

- I asked why the employees were opposed to the management's decision. She said it happens all the time at this SPCA because it is such an emotional thing. She said it is much different in (where I live) because more animals are put down in (where I live). What that has to do with anything I don't know but that was her come back!!

- I asked if she had ever witnessed Cheech attacking someone. She said yes.

- And this one just blows me away. She had the nerve to tell me that "everyone who works at the SPCA is passionate about animals otherwise they wouldn't be working there because it's certainly not for the money".

- I asked to speak to Craig Daniell. She didn't even try connecting me, she just came right out and said that there is no way Craig would speak to me about this.
