Why Don’t Animal Models Help Our Health?Types of Vivisection in Canada in 2006
Numerous doctors agree that vivisection retards scientific progress because these animal models are
unlike naturally occurring human diseases or injuries. The researcher is not looking at the human
malady. Furthermore, some methods tested, such as drug therapies, react differently on various
species of animals. Data obtained from animal models cannot be reliably extrapolated to solve human
problems.
Documented reviews of medical history in such fields as heart disease, diabetes and AIDS research
substantiate the position that major medical advances are a result of studies that include in-vitro (non-animal)
tests and human epidemiological studies (the study of naturally occurring diseases or injury).
Who Funds Vivisection
1. “Health” organizations such as the Heart Foundation, BC Lung Association’s Christmas Seal
Campaign, Canadian Diabetes Association, BC Cancer, Rick Hansen Foundation, Michael J.
Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and many others.
2. Government and Businesses.
3. Public donations.
Types of Vivisection
Michael J. Fox Foundation:
mammalian PD models as well as those that propose substantial improvement of existing PD
models.” They admit that the existing models do not work.
Rick Hansen Foundation: Various species used in spinal cord research that includes severing
the spinal cords of animals and forcing them to attempt to walk on tread mills to repeat what is
already known - exercise improves motor function.
Cosmetic/Home Products Tests: No anaesthesias or painkillers are given to the millions of
animals subjected to these so-call “safety” tests.
Biomedical Research: Biomedical research can involve burning, blinding, freezing and poisoning
of animals. Animals can be subjected to electric shock and long-term restraint
Animal Science: In an effort to find even cheaper ways of producing meat and to try to find ways
to reduce the health hazards caused by eating animals, animal science research is conducted.
Military Experiments: Animals are intentionally wounded with bullets, lasers and other weapons
to develop and test the effects of munitions.
Psychology Experiments: Brainwashing, deprivation and depression experiments are carried
out on animals despite the outcry from many psychologists.
What Can I Do?
For a better health care and research system, write to politicians, hospitals, charitable organizations
and research institutes telling them you want your money used for non-animal research, as a more
economical, safe and efficient improvement over current practices.
