My precious Pepper became blind only four months after I rescued her from death row at the Ottawa SPCA. She was four years old. She passed away, in my arms, last November at the age of 18-1/2 years.
Pepper taught me about love, patience, and developing a greater understanding of those with disabilities. She was a much loved dog who helped the neighbourhood children understand that being blind does not limit anyone. They were fascinated by the way she was able to get around, play with them, respond to them when they called her name, kiss their faces ... and she never stopped smiling.
She wasn't human, but I would never tell her that.
