Skeeter

Chilliwack Animal Control (CAC, the Chilliwack pound) sent an email to the rescue network about a very young, ailing pup who needed out, quickly.  Only 8-weeks old, he had worms, lice, fleas, and was not doing well in a pound; in fact, there was some concern about how long he would last.

AAS got back instantly and told CAC to get the pup to their vet as quickly as possible, get him treated for all the parasites, and board him in the warmth of the clinic until we found a foster home for him.

We did - we asked Diane who has fostered so many dogs for AAS, and she said yes.  When we got Skeeter he had a bladder infection, which Diane, with all her years of valuable experience, recognized.  That day, Skeeter was in to our vet, and antibiotics were started.

Within days the infection was cleared up and Skeeter started his new life.  These pictures taken by Diane tell the tale of a lucky little pup who started life uncared for, went to a pound where the employees really care for their charges and who work with many real animal welfare groups, and came to Diane to be fostered. He sleeps beside Diane's bed and plays all day long with her dogs, goes up the mountain every day for hikes, and when a sleepy little boy has had all the fun he can take, has cuddles with his foster Mum.

“When Animal Advocates brought Skeeter to my son and me he was about 12 weeks old. He was little, black, with a cute white blaze and the floppiest ears. We fell in love. We ran the gauntlet of AAS’s adoption protocols and he was ours. It was like bringing home a miracle."

BUT TOO SOON THERE WAS A CRISIS IN LITTLE SKEETER'S LIFE...

"A few months after adopting him he got really sick. Vets at Canada West told me that he had hepatitis and AIDS. That was only the beginning of his medical issues.  They told us he might last six more weeks; maybe six years, but they couldn’t really tell. I slept with him at the vet clinic every night in my arms, not knowing if he would be awake in the morning. My husband and I talked about the dining room addition we had planned to make to the house and it was a no-brainer.  No dining room addition.  Skeeter.

That was about seven years and $40,000 ago. He is now big, black, shiny and healthy, with the beautiful blaze, big brown soulful eyes and still the floppy ears that perk up and go back and forth as he is trying to figure out what you are saying. Cesar Milan would scold us - he sleeps in my bed, we feed him lots of treats, he eats mostly eats sockeye salmon with his dog food and generally runs things around here. A lot of love, care, nutrients and medicine later, he has grown up into the most gorgeous, intelligent, intuitive creature I have ever met. When I look at him, I get what my friend calls a “love attack”.
