Beauty the Black Lab

Many great AAS rescue videos
Many wonderful happy ending stories

Hi AAS,

I was reading some stories on your website – saw the ones about people rescuing  dogs….I am in the ranks of “law abiding” citizens who have done that….my beloved black lab I saved from backyard hell.

She was about 1 1/2 years old at the time.  Her owner worked in construction and was gone from early morning until late afternoon.  As a pup she was left in the house all day alone, and never having learned about house training she could be heard being beaten for relieving herself in the house.  He was seen being hit with a shovel, kicked, any number of things.  He tied her mouth shut so she wouldn’t bark.

Later, as she got older she was tied on a 24” chain, inside of a kennel/dog run.  Unable to move far, she was left to sit in her own excrement all day even in 30 degree heat with no protection from the sun.  The SPCA had been called a number of times, same story.  As long as they have water, “shelter”, and food, no law is being broken.

Eventually I could not stand it anymore.  One day a friend and I put on our sunglasses and ball caps, and armed with chicken nuggets went to the house and took the dog for a “walk”.  Never to return her.  In the car on the way to my house, she was in the back seat, wagging her tail, and alternating putting her head on our shoulders.

I took her home and showered her (she smelled like poo).  The first night I made a bed for her and told her to lie down and stay.  When I got up in the morning I swear to god the dog had not moved a muscle. She was lying in exactly the same position. I think she was afraid to move.

She was a Beaut!  That became her name... Beauty. I took her for a long walk and a swim.  She was ecstatic!  When she got home she was so tired she wanted to nap so badly, her head would droop, but she was afraid, and would snap herself awake.

It didn’t take long for her to realize we were never going to hurt her.  The neighbour told us that a few weeks passed and eventually the owner knocked on her door demanding the dog be returned as he knew she had something to do with the disappearance.  She said she knew nothing and that was that….the dog spent the rest of her life completely adored by us.

She was the best, most amazing dog EVER….I still miss her so much.

There has been such a flood of appeals for help this year that we may not be able to reply very quickly or at all to more appeals.  AAS is now so well-known for its experience in all animal welfare and rescue matters that we are asked for advice and help from all over BC, Canada, the U.S. and the world.  For years I have answered each and every appeal with detailed advice that I have learned from 20 years of rescue, advocacy and animal law. Our high standards are well-known to the public, that is why we are so often asked for help and advice.

We are currently working on so many projects that I am sorry to have to say that we may not be able to respond to all the cries for help we hear as quickly as we want to.

AAS ethical standards are simple and straightforward, but a lot of work: Every rescued dog is given the exact same love and care that I give my own dogs.  Anything less can't be morally justified.  To weigh the costs, to kill, or to rehome without paying to make the dog well in body and spirit is not true animal welfare: it's moving as much product as fast as possible and to demand money for unwell product is a business, not a calling.
