Of all the many thousands of dogs suffering on chains and in pens none break our hearts more than the ones that are also freezing, sometimes to death, in sub-zero weather so cold that it kills their ears and feet. Howling wind storms make them literally crazy with fear. We've had hundreds of reports from neighbours of these dogs describing their piteous crying and mad chewing at their chains or the sides of their pens, in futile attempts to escape into the arms of their "families"; the very people who put them on the chains and who sleep soundly through their dogs' begging pleas for help. The loneliness of yard dogs is intensified by fear, cold, heat, flies, and filth. Infestations of maggots that have burrowed into their flesh and organs are commonly reported to us.
AAS has been rescuing as many freezing dogs as it can for many years. This year we were contacted by a dog rescuer near Whitehorse Yukon asking us for help for a chain dog that was soon to be shot if the rescuer didn't find a home for him. That was Diesel and there is a link to his rescue story below.
AAS has started a campaign especially for winter dogs called
THE FREEZING DOGS FREEDOM TRAIN
We want to be able to get more dogs from
the Yukon and all over BC when and where dogs are freezing. We need your kind
donations to help us pay their substantial vet and rehabilitation bills.
Please give as generously as you can. Monthly donations are what allow us
to do the most.
