Killing of beavers discussed

Ruth Masters’ concerns about the killing of beavers in Brooklyn Creek received support from a few Comox councillors who said they were upset with the way the animals in the area were handled.

“I appreciate seeing this letter and I certainly agree with the writer,” said Coun. Patti Fletcher who asked that staff consider other plans for dealing with animals in the town’s greenspaces.

Mayor Jim Brass recognized that the decision to use lethal traps for the beavers threatening to flood town and residential properties didn’t include all of council — and said they would handle that part differently if it were to happen again.

“If this occurs again we will attempt to have all of council sit down and have a discussion about what’s going to occur,” he said.

In this case, he added, he felt there was no other option.
