The staff at the Langley Animal Shelter are looking forward to the start of construction at a new purpose-built animal shelter.

The Township is currently finishing up the last details for the project, which will replace the current shelter.

"We started talking about this from the moment we opened shop in 2003," said shelter manager Sean Baker.

The shelter is run by the Langley Animal Protection Society, but the Township is responsible for the new building.

It will replace the ad hoc current building, a former kennel located on 56th Avenue just west of 264th Street.

"There'll be proper space for dangerous and sick animals, both cats and dogs," Baker said.

The current building was designed for one person to run it most of the time, leaving little room for LAPS staff and volunteers who are busy all day long in the structure.

Baker said LAPS wants to be able to deal with growth in Langley for decades to come in the new building.

The local population is still going up, and about one in six people owns an animal.
