How to Afford Veterinary Care without Mortgaging the Kids

How to Afford Veterinary Care without Mortgaging the Kids

This is book written by an old-time veterinarian, Dr. James Busby D.V.M. Sadly he will be retiring soon. http://www.oldcountryvet.com/

I thought that your readers would enjoy some of his many thought-provoking comments. A great Christmas gift!

On VACCINATION:

“After 13 or 14 weeks of age I am convinced that there is NO BENEFIT in giving a series of vaccinations.---When someone tells you that vaccinations need to be repeated over and over again, think how often they need to be repeated on you or your children,”

On DEMANDING health checks and blood tests before refilling prescriptions:

“This is another area of great abuse. --- I do not think it is ethical to deny your pet its medication if you refuse the tests. --- Veterinarians will almost always let you go without medication if you refuse to let them extract $50 or more from you with a periodic exam between refills.”

On DENTISTRY:

“Dentistry has been a godsend to the veterinary profession. The profession implies that animals are no different than humans and need to be treated the same with regards to their teeth. If you believe this, I have a gold mine in Minnesota I will sell cheap. ---I feel strongly that the bulk of tooth cleaning and oral surgery done today is mainly a generator of clinic income with minimal benefit to the animal.”

On PRESURGICAL SCREENING TESTS:

“Having had close to 30 000 dogs and cats under anaesthesia in the past 40 years and never having lost one from anaesthetic that pre-surgical screening would have prevented, I would say emphatically NO. ---Find an older veterinarian who does all the surgery himself and spare the cost of the pre-surgical screening.”
