Big Heart Rescue prize winner on Gabriola!

As if Christmas Eve weren’t already exciting enough for Mellow (beautiful Golden Retriever) Pope the day became even more exciting when the phone rang that morning. A call from Barry Moerkerken of Big Heart Rescue let Mellow’s family know that Mellow had won first prize in the Big Heart Rescue Christmas draw.

Mellow and her owner Pat, had entered the draw earlier in December, during a visit to Twin Cedars Veterinary Clinic, where Mellow was getting a check-up and inoculations. Barry arrived soon after his Christmas Eve phone call to the Popes, and presented Mellow with her prize: a large basket, heaping with bones, toys and other goodies. Mellow was so excited, she hardly had time to stop for a smile and the photograph shown above. Later, after she had ripped into the wrapping and chosen two small chew-bones and an “Ocean Chew” from the basket, Mellow was overheard to say, “This has got to be the bestest Christmas ever: with Sean and Laura visiting from Burnaby, and a nice warm home and kind owners, I’m a lot more fortunate than so many other animals. Big Heart Rescue is the greatest!”

Big Heart Rescue works hard to find homes for animals that are not as fortunate as Mellow. Since it was formally organized as a non-profit charity in 2002, the Big Heart Rescue Society has arranged for a large number of companion animals to be vaccinated, sterilized, vetted, fostered and adopted. Mellow whole-heartedly supports Big Heart’s work in the care and rehabilitation of companions in need of medical intervention, training and re-homing.
