Victoria police are on the lookout for a $750 eight-week-old puppy, dognapped from a View Street pet store yesterday.

The tiny pup -- he's 75 per cent Bichon and 25 per cent Pekinese and is about 10 centimetres tall -- was taken from a cage at the front of Kritters and Fins Pet Shop by two people, one of whom was described as a teenage girl. Such small, non-shedding dogs have gained huge popularity in the past few years, with many young movie stars packing the dogs around in their purses.

Five young people went into the store about 11 a.m. While three distracted staff by asking to look at snakes at the back of the store, a male and female grabbed the male dog out of the cage and made off with him.

Store owner Pam Andrews is worried because the puppy, being so young, requires a lot of care. She had just brought the dog into the store on Monday.

The brown, grey and white dog "looks like a stuffed animal," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
