Euphemisms in the trapping trade

My letter of Jan. 27/08 to the Whitehorse Star:

I have noticed that each and every letter written by those who attempt to support the argument for trapping animals, must resort to the kindest possible euphemisms when describing their pillaging.

I propose that we substitute their watered down phrasing with the honest wording in these letters - e.g.:

'trapping = murdering unsuspecting creatures'
'checking traps = prying out the dead bodies'
'traps are humane = the dying animals cannot chew off their legs to escape'
'harvesting a renewable source = murdering animals that have given birth to more victims'
'trappers are the first to report disease = they are serving their own purpose of assuring their preys' coats are worth big bucks'
and finally: 'fur products = blood-soaked hides of various innocent and helpless animals'

I also dispute the assurance that checking their traps daily spares the animals' suffering; firstly, I don't imagine these poor creatures are aware that they will have to spend only 8 hours bleeding and in insufferable pain,
and secondly, being given the final blows of death by hammers to the head or shot in the skull so that their beautiful coats are kept pristine, probably doesn't fill them with relief.

Mankind has always justified its lust for power and greed with every benign-sounding reason they can muster, until the outcry from those who have standards of kindness and goodness become too intense to be ignored.

For the sake of millions of blameless, guiltless creatures, I hope our voices are soon heard worldwide.
