Delta wants dog that hurt baby declared dangerous

The municipality of Delta is seeking a dangerous-dog declaration against a German shepherd or German shepherd cross allegedly involved in attacks on other dogs, neighbours and a baby in a stroller.

A petition filed in B.C. Supreme Court says Delta is also applying for a number of orders, including that the dog and a second dog also owned by the Saville family remain on a leash and under the control of a competent person.

Another order sought is that the more aggressive dog, named Kira, be muzzled while in public places.

Court documents say that in September 1999, Kira, while off leash in Winskill Park in Delta, attacked a dachshund-type dog, tearing a large hole in the victim dog's stomach requiring surgery by a vet.

In December 1999, Kira and the second dog, Camal, ran out of their owner's property on 6A Avenue and attacked a woman while she was walking her dog and pushing her baby daughter in a stroller, the documents say.

"Serious injury was avoided due to intervention by neighbours, but during the attack the stroller was knocked over and the infant received a bump and a bruise on her head and scratches under her left eye and her cheek," documents say.

A third attack occurred on an American Eskimo-type dog in April 2000, with Kira biting the dog on its side, causing a large wound.

There were no further attacks until last year, apparently due to the fact that Kira was moved to a rural location.

After the attacks resumed, Kira was seized. The dog will be returned to the owners once they have licensed it for 2007 and 2008, says the petition.

The owners could not be reached.
