Members of Montreal's SPCA are hoping to vote in a change to its board of directors this spring.

Pierre Barnoti, the controversial executive director of the humane society, who some accuse of misusing funds and taking part in unethical fundraising practices, is required to answer to the board.

Five vacant seats and one seat up for election at the hard-fought annual meeting April 9 means there could be a shift on the 12-member board.

"We want more accountability and transparency," said Neil Halsey, who left his seat on the board in October because he felt the organization was not working toward its goals.

"We have a good team (up for election)," said Halsey, citing experts in financial management, animal management and small-business experts.

Vice-president Nancy Breitman agreed to hold the meeting following a petition submitted by 57 members of the CSPCA.

The meeting will take place April 9 at the Segal Centre, 5170 Côte Ste. Catherine Rd., at 7 p.m. Proof of membership is required.

Membership registration, available through www.sagm.info, will be held until March 29.
