Animal Advocates Watchdog

"Horses of the Southeast are starving. What's causing this heartbreak in horse country?"

CBS Evening News has been focusing on animal issues this week. Last night, Tuesday, March 25, they covered the foreclosure crisis and the effect on animals. (Thanks to Karen Caesar for pointing it out.) It is an effective, though "happy ending" story, which you can read or watch on line at http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/03/25/eveningnews/main3967758.shtml or http://tinyurl.com/27eomq
It is vital that stations get positive feedback for animal friendly stories so please, post a comment at the bottom of the page, or send a thank you to the show at evening@cbsnews.com

Tonight, CBS Evening News (on at 6:30 in most markets) will air a story that is being promoted with the line, "Horses of the Southeast are starving. What's causing this heartbreak in horse country?" (Thanks to Sean McVity for letting us know about it.) I am slightly apprehensive as sometimes the spin on these stories is that we need to bring back rather than permanently ban horse slaughter. (Learn more about those myths, and the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act, at http://tinyurl.com/3brczo .) It is rare for a reporter to suggest that retirement to sanctuaries, humane euthanization, and controlling the industries that over breed horses would be more ethical solutions than sending the animals to slaughter. But tune if you can -- and I will follow up tomorrow.
