Children's field trip will highlight animal cruelty

Things definitely aren't run here in the Yukon with the best interests of animals in mind.

My children are upset about an upcoming school field trip which will involve ice fishing and learning hunting techniques, along with other more palatable activities such as snowshoeing, studying animal tracks and learning about traditional medicines. This is part of the school curriculum in celebration of cultural heritage week.

There is a rich cultural heritage in this region that does not involve harming and killing animals. I wonder why the school wishes to celebrate in this fashion.

My son (a grade 4 student) is in his room right now making anti-trapping posters to take to the field trip, if he goes at all. My daughter (a kindergarten student) says she doesn't want to go on the field trip, and she will explain to her teacher that she doesn't want to go because she is a vegetarian.

I hope the school will be willing and able to accommodate their views. If not, I'll certainly be going to bat for them.
