RUFF GUYS TO RESCUE

March 24, 2008 -- Beloved bulldog Clara - snatched outside a Midtown supermarket - has been returned to her grateful family, thanks to the efforts of some burly, tattooed volunteers from a Long Island animal-welfare group.

"They are absolute angels," said Jessica Kurland, Clara's owner. "This is an Easter miracle."

The tattooed tender-hearts of the nonprofit Rescue Ink read about Clara in The Post.

"We look like a bunch of animals ourselves," quipped rescuer John DePrima.

"So we figured the best approach was to get into the neighborhood and make a little noise and rattle a few trees."

The crew handed out hundreds of fliers, knocked on doors and quizzed storeowners about last Wednesday's dognapping on West 48th Street.

The footwork paid off, and Saturday morning, two anonymous good Samaritans phoned Kurland, saying they had spotted the dog and took her in.

Howard Stern, the shock-jock beau of Kurland's friend Beth Ostrosky, had broadcast the story.

"We're just so happy that everything turned out well," Ostrosky said.
