Another example of ridiculous, antiquated animal laws. These people can't pick up the phone and let the SPCA deal with the very dogs they are responsible for creating?

I think shooting any animal because of overpopulation is cruel and insane. How would we as humans like it because we are overpopulated in some areas started to get shot for that same reason. Look how over populated we are as a society now with clearcutting the forests around us so that we can build more houses where farms etc used to be. If anything some of the population that treats animals like that should be dealt with in the same manner. Karma does come around for everyone and those people that do that for those stupid reasons will have their day. And I hope they realize the errors of their ways or they will suffer the same way.

I wonder what mother earth and the creator would say about this?

ConnieFri, Apr 25, 08 at 10:50 AM
This story is disgusting!! Frankly I am usually one standing up for first nations issues and although this was probably the actions of a handful of killers this entire practise is not right. Were this some sort of land claim thing were there was money involved I'm sure the Anaham Band would be front and center, well this time someone from this band has done something wrong and it is time to stand and deliver.

taxedoutbypoliticians@canada.comFri, Apr 25, 08 at 10:57 AM
scum shooting a poor defenceless animal. Sounds pretty backwards to me.

RickFri, Apr 25, 08 at 11:27 AM
The irony in this entire episode is that Remington is probably smarter than the person with the rifle.

AFri, Apr 25, 08 at 11:36 AM
Only on a "RESERVE" these people are allowed to do whatever they want and that's why I have "NO RESPECT" for them!

Wendy Fri, Apr 25, 08 at 11:37 AM
What the hell is wrong with people? If you bring a pet into your life you are now responible for it. There should be tougher restrictions on being able to breed and buy any pet. When I decided on a breed of dog to buy I saved for it and saved the money I would need to have it sterilized. Then I kept saving because if anything happened to my pets I would do anything to save them. Some people look at dogs and cats a dime a dozen but for people like me who can not have children these pets become our children.

NickFri, Apr 25, 08 at 11:43 AM
Maybe there's a reason first nations tribes lost their land so many years ago... their way of life is going the way of the inca and the maya etc and there's no reason we shouldn't let it.
Alaina Fri, Apr 25, 08 at 11:51 AM
How can people go around shooting poor animals. How is it a law that you can shoot a dog if you kill them instatly???? I was unaware that the First Nations people in this case wher vets as well good for them. IDIOTS!!!!

LoriFri, Apr 25, 08 at 12:05 PM
HOW CAN A PERSON DO THAT TO AN INNOCENT ANIMAL.THE PERSON WHO DID THIS SOULD BE HELD RESPONISBLE FOR PAYING THIS ANIMALS FEES .

karaFri, Apr 25, 08 at 12:31 PM
Could I ask why anyone is firing a gun on school grounds? Why dead or dying animals were left to be found potentially by school children? Why people leave their pets run free to potentially be shot? I grew up in an area where loose neighbourhood dogs posed a serious risk to farm animals, and humans as they would gather and run together over miles. I would trust a wild coyote or wolf before I trusted a "gang dog". ...gee just like humans those who are left uncared for end up displaying unstable, and harmful behaviour. That would be our fault not the dogs.

JudyFri, Apr 25, 08 at 01:22 PM
This is sad and wrong, but it doesn't matter who they are or where them come from. So "A" you can keep your comments to yourself...you wonder why nobody RESPECTS YOU...you are narrow minded. You need to understand that the majority of people on this reserve are very upset with this. But in your mind, if it was a white guy and his son shooting a dog for crapping in his yard, you'd be cheering...but since it's natives, you have to reference "these people" and "them"...you are the reason why there is racism in our society...too bad you'll never understand.

BARBFri, Apr 25, 08 at 01:45 PM
Here we go again....1st Nations getting the "freebies" and not taking advantage of them....they only do what the please....stay uneducated and poor....when they have so many opportunities...even help with maintaining a simple thing as owning a pet....Give your heads a shake and grow up!

DISTGUSTING!Fri, Apr 25, 08 at 01:55 PM
I have always wondered what kind of pleasure these sick people get out of abusing/killing animals!

PatFri, Apr 25, 08 at 01:58 PM
Well what a surprise, yet another incident on a reserve goes unpunished. If this incident had involved anyone other than a first nations band member, there would be a search for whoever perpetrated the slaughter of those animals, which would be followed by the courts imposing some ridiculously small fine on the individual or individuals that were responsible. What scares me is that even though studies have shown that cruelty to animals can indicate more serious underlying psychological problems in people, no one seems to be making much of an effort to punish and, if necessary, provide psychological assistance to people that are cruel to animals. This should be a situation where the police should take a stand and say this behaviour will not be tolerated, regardless of who you are.

AFri, Apr 25, 08 at 02:26 PM
Hey Judy! Keep your comments to "YOURSELF" I grew up around native reserves and it takes a lot more than them shooting a dog for me to lose respect! I've seen more crap than you could imagine! As for racism and you saying " I'll never understand " trust me I do but I DON"T think you do!

Disgusting Fri, Apr 25, 08 at 02:38 PM
So this is showing respect for animals and earth? There is no honourable native culture anymore. Its dead. Guns to kill whales, shooting stray dogs, drinking and drugging...what a beautiful culture we are being asked to protect.

SueFri, Apr 25, 08 at 02:47 PM
Wow... what a surprise!More like 'far from it', once you hear what "land" this has occured on. And "they" want more Rights?

LauraFri, Apr 25, 08 at 03:13 PM
This person who did this is a sick twisted S.O.B

RebeccaFri, Apr 25, 08 at 03:19 PM
I just went and looked at Remington on the SPCA website...he is SUPER cute and I would adopt him if I could but I have a cat and am not home enough for a dog.

JermaineFri, Apr 25, 08 at 03:47 PM
I lived in a very northern community a few years back. What often happens is the trappers etc who use dogs to pull their sleds in winter simply let them go in summer. Many of these dogs are more wolves than they are dogs. At that time once or twice every couple of years someone in the northern communities would be seriously injured if not killed by these dogs running wild. On one occasion in Hay River the wife of the local RCMP member was killed by a pack of sled dogs. It was the same deal in the communities where I lived. Dogs running loose were fair game. I recall that mounties and wildlife officials sometimes went on patrols. They would sit in the back of trucks with shot guns, pull up beside a dog running wild and blast them. Most of you are right, these dogs should be kept confined or whatever 365 days a year. It is lazy and irresponsible for people to simply let these animals roam freely for half the year.

Richard HeadFri, Apr 25, 08 at 03:57 PM
This is a serious thing and totally unacceptable. That said, and this is coming from someone with not a drop of first nation's blood in his veins, what is equally unacceptable are the people who will instantly jump on this one in order to get in their racist digs on some first nations people. I'll tell you people like Barb, Disgusting (perfect name for yourself by the way) et al, if it was to happen that every time a white anglo saxon person committed an offense someone like you jumped on them and showered them with racist remarks you would die of an inferiority complex. Just a little primer, you are in a flap about someone who shoots a dog...surely a bad thing...what did you think about the white kid that killed all the flamingos in Stanley Park a few years ago...what do you think of Warren Glowatski and Kelly Ellard, in case you forget, they were the neat caucasian teens who broke Rena Virk's arms and legs then threw her in a river to drown, what do you think of Paul Bernardo or Clifford Olsen...they are one of yours!!!! Good for you Rebecca!!!!!!

raeFri, Apr 25, 08 at 04:54 PM
why do people always point fingers at the first nations when it happens on reserve? why do you think life is "easy" for first nations? have you not heard about the legacy of indian residential schools? are you that blind and dumb? atleast we don't go around posing as christian priests or nuns and rape and beat kids because of the colour of skin, language and whatever else is not the same as white people. hypocrites...

taxedoutbypoliticians@canada.comFri, Apr 25, 08 at 05:06 PM
Disgusting summed it up well....

Hey "A" Judy has it right when she tells your uniformed, opinionated self to STFU.......The Native folks to Canada have been sequestered on "Reserves" because we, the European imagrants allowed them this small token as we stole their country right out from under them and then we proceeded to destroy their culture and YOU have the nerve to say you have no respect for them. What about yourself? Have any self-respect? No! Because if you did you wouldn't make such ignorant comments. If you grew up around reserves as you put it you should have far more understanding and knowledge than you demostrated here today! Judy Rock on!

Used to live on a native reserve near Terrace BC. They would pay young men to go out and round up stray dogs several times a year. The dogs were then tied to trees and shot or electrocuted. It was horrifying, and the Terrace SPCA said they couldn't do anything about it. I used to rescue them and take them to the shelter if I could, and several times they tried to take my licensed dogs as well. I believe the men were paid per dog. The dogs were considered cute as puppies and then neglected and unfed as they got older. They ran in packs but were never dangerous to humans, just starving for both food and affection. The treatment of all animals there disgusted me as a child, and even though my parents brought me up to respect all people, I really lost any respect I had for these people pretty quickly. So much for being "Keepers of the Earth" as they like to call themselves. My horror stories about that place and the way they abused animals could go on forever.

ElleeFri, Apr 25, 08 at 09:46 PM
But a whale is the spirit of a dead leader and the interference by the natives led to the death of that animal too. Hmmm, who are these peaceful people of the sacred land?

RemkoTue, Apr 29, 08 at 09:26 PM
Indeed it is a very cowardy act to assault and mame a dog, any dog like this (any being for that matter). Remington is a very behaved and gentle dog. Remington has a smile on his face every time he looks at you. His coat is very thick and fuzzy, except on the 2 square feet of his body where he was shaved for the operation. It is very hard to believe that a dog that went thru so much pain and agression is so very trustful and happy. This should be an example for our race, no matter what colour they are. How do I know? I , I mean our family adopted Remington on Monday and brought him home. I had a shower with Remington the minute we got home, to clean and shampoo him. It brings tears to my eyes (and I am a guy, no pun intended) knowing that we will make a difference in this dogs life. We have a dog aIready, they are buddies since they met yesterday and it is amazing that Remington with only 3 legs beats him up the stairs. I would like to thanks the people that found him and the BCSPCA for saving Remington for a better life. Thank you.
