A Saanich man has now been charged with animal cruelty after a cat was caught in a trap that had been set in his yard late last month.

The cat died a few days later after being taken to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

SPCA animal-protection officer Erika Paul said the cat's owners discovered their pet in the device.

"They could hear the cat crying and found it in the trap," she said.

"They banged at the door of the house and eventually the owner came out, and used a tool to release the springs on the conibear trap."

The accused could face a fine or possible jail time, Paul said.

Raymond Robinson is scheduled for a June 11 court appearance.
