Why does Watson disavow animal rights?

I thought this was a wonderful posting from Paul Watson.
He raised many excellent points about the necessity of at least a vegetarian, and ultimately a vegan diet in promoting sustainable conservation and environmentalist goals.
We must get out of the meat eating industry as far as possible, or we risk losing our lives on this planet.
However, it saddened me that Paul felt the need to point out four times in this article that neither he nor the Sea Shepherd Society are for "animal rights".
Then who is he really trying to save the planet for? Just humans? Just the oceans?
I understand that Paul does not like being dismissed as "some wacko animal rights group" but it isn't clear to me whether he is trying to buy back points from the public and the media by his disavowal of animal rights.
That doesn't sound like Paul, as he is not one to mince words with the media, so I will contact him, and see if he would like to take the opportunity to explain his views in more depth.
Personally, I don't understand a disconnect between conservation, environmentalism and animal rights.
