There was no need for this dog to end up the way it did. Here we have a concerned citizen, animal lover doing his all to help and take this animal away from a cruel environment. Mr. Bona reported to the SPCA on 2 occasions, then after trying to talk with the owner is told by a Police Officer not to bother the owner again. That's great assistance to an abuse complaint.
This animal was failed by the actual people that are being funded to protect from such abuse.
Not only should the owner be taken to task but in my opinion an investigative inquiry should be started on the SPCA for not doing their job...
although the picture of this dog sickened me, the front page of your paper is exactly where it should be. thank you mr bona.and the cape breton post for bringing this out into the open. i wonder how many more cases like this are not acted on because no one brings it to the public's attention. the spca should be ashamed of themselves. it shouldn't take very much training to figure out when an animal is been abused...
It is shocking and deeply distressing to read about the cruel fate of this poor dog. I commend Mr. Bona for trying to help and I am appalled that the SPCA did not provide protection. No dog should spend it's life, in isolation, at the end of a chain. Surely, the standards of care enbedded in our animal welfare laws enpower the SPCA to act when an animal is being kept in conditions so unlikely to be consistent with humane care. Those of us in the Bullmastiff community react to this situation with added outrage. We inform potential Bullmastiff owners that this is not a breed for outdoor living. Bullmastiffs are sound family dogs and thrive as in-home companions.
