Bail conditions have restricted C. Haughton from returning to her home (ranch) and caring for her animals. But because she is still the owner, she is therefore responsible for the animals being fed and cared for.
Bail conditions did not provide for any care or feed for animals by the court and without having skilled ranch hands and not relying on “divine intervention” she provided food and information on care of livestock to the caregivers.
Which is what any responsible livestock owner would have done and is now in jail for breach. Why? If she had not provided the food and information what would have happened? She is already charged with cruelty to animals for having a dirty house/kennel and awaiting trial in 2011.
The constant checking and inspections by the SPCA is legalized harassment and should concern every livestock owner. As for the poor condition of some of the sheep, every rancher, farmer and veterinarian knows the frustration of having some animals that are unthrifty. Poor doers or runts and regardless of the amount of feed, medicine and care will always fail to thrive. Only in the perfect world envisioned by the SPCA would this not happen.
M. Moriarty (SPCA), responding to questions regarding seizure of great Danes on Radio NL’s Jim Harrison Show stated “there is no way she is going to win this case.”
How is it that she is able to predict the outcome of a trial scheduled to take place in 2011? What power does the SPCA have that she is able to say this?
Why does the SPCA want Carol Haughton kept in jail until the outcome of the cruelty trial? What is their agenda?
If Carol Haughton can’t go to her ranch and is kept in jail, she will be unable to get hay and provisions in place for winter and will be unable to gather her livestock. Will she then be charged with failing to provide adequately for her livestock and have them seized?
What is the SPCA trying to prove – they are supposed to prevent cruelty! Being put in jail for providing food and information for care of livestock is an abuse of power by the courts, judge and defies definition of justice and common sense.
