Deal struck to save wild horses from slaughter in B.C.'s south Okanagan

By CHBC News, Kelowna February 26, 2011 9:50 AM

A Summerland animal rescue group has struck a deal with the B.C. government to save wild horses from slaughter.

This week, Summerland-based Critteraid began taking in and rehabilitating wild horses that are being rounded up on Crown land.

Critteraid had found out the Ministry of Natural Resource Operations was gathering the horses to protect grasslands from being over-grazed.

Theresa Nolet of Critteraid says the horses were being put up for auction in Kamloops, which she says usually means they are going to be slaughtered.

Nolet called up Kelowna-Mission MLA Steve Thomson and he agreed to hand the horses over to Critteraid instead.

The group picked up its first rescue on Wednesday. The horse will now be trained and prepared for adoption.

But rescuing wild horses does not come cheap. Nolet estimates the cost of transportation, feed, veterinarian treatments and training will be more than $1,000 per animal.

With four more wild horses waiting to be handed over to the non-profit group, the costs will add up.

Thomson says he has asked staff to look at creating a policy to govern how wild horses are dealt with in the future. He says he hopes to continue working with organizations like Critteraid.
