Why has CEO Craig Daniell put the cart before the horse? Why did he (and why did the BC SPCA Board of Directors permit him to) seize animals before he had staff trained and knowledgeable in animal health or welfare; before the SPCA had clean and humane facilities to house the seized animals; before all its staff were taught simple cleanliness and sterilization procedures; before it had implemented rehabilitation programs; before it had the money to treat illnesses (it constantly justifies killing the sick by crying poor); before inspectors were trained to make notes of a seizure and bring them to court; before SPCA enforcers were informed that it is a flagrant abuse of Canadians' rights to reasonable search and seizure and privacy to bring the media with it when it swoops down on an "abuser"?
Why indeed? It locked up seized animals in its diseased facilities and then killed them when they got sick. It refused to let animals go to rescuers and killed them instead.
But it did put many new, inexperienced employees through quickie training in its junk science "behaviour assessment testing", the test the SPCA used to justify killing these helpless, frightened creatures. So much suffering, so little good done. And ultimately, it may mean the end of the SPCA.
Vets, lawyers, and victims say that the SPCA has done all this to enrich itself. There certainly is the appearance of that. We think we can prove it if the SPCA forces us to court.
