Fish Farm Flap

VANCOUVER(CKNW/AM980) - Federal officials insist consumers were not kept in the dark about the discovery of a toxic chemical in some farmed fish from Vancouver Island.
A recall notice went out in early March that some of the salmon from Stolt Seafarms in Campbell River had shown levels of "Malachite Green".
That's a chemical used to prevent fungus in aquarium fish but not in food fish.
Stephen Stephen with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says Health Canada deems that a level-2 health risk.
"a situation where there is a reasonable probability that the consumption or exposure to the food will lead to a temporary or non-life-threatening health consequence or that the probability of serious or adverse consequences is considered remote."
Based on that information, Stephen says his agency issued a class-2 recall, in which the processors are notified but it's not generally publicized.
Stephen is not aware of anyone actually getting sick from eating the tainted fish.
