Animal Advocates Watchdog

Dear SPCA: Do you exist to protect animals from people or people from animals?

"And now I have a situation that tells me my donations and my licensing fees are worth nothing in terms of protecting my pet."

Thank you Elan, for doing your best to protect this dog from harm - I would have done the same.

I'm sorry that your donations have not been spent as you intended - to protect animals. Unfortunately, many SPCA branches in this province still hold animal control contracts. Animal control contracts are contracts between a district or municipality, and an animal control agency, either public or private, to protect people from animals. They are not contracts to protect animals from people.

The BC SPCA still chooses to be animal control in many cities and municipalities in BC. It still chooses to accept money to protect people from animals (which means killing animals), yet it continues to promote itself as an agency that protects animals from people. And its mandate actually states that it exists to protect animals from people, not people from animals. So it's no wonder you are confused. An entire province has been mislead along with you.

Thank you for taking the time to catch and shelter this dog yourself. I suppose the SPCA must keep "business" hours, seeing as it is really in the dog control business in your municipality, rather than animal welfare. Maybe one day the SPCA will get out of pound contracting and be freed up to do true animal welfare, and spend your money as you had intended - helping animals. But for now, lucky for the dog that he had you to "speak for" him.
