I am writing with great concern about Hazina, the young hippo currently residing at the Greater Vancouver Zoo. After ten months of spending day after day in her horrifically small barn, her new pen is nowhere in sight.
The Greater Vancouver Zoo acquired Hazina in 2004 without building a proper enclosure for her. Since then they have promised a new and wonderful enclosure, setting its due date firstly by the end of October 2004, and then in early spring of 2005, and finally by the end of August 2005. Summer is nearly over, and the new hippo enclosure is nowhere near finished.
Animals is captivity never thrive. No matter how big of an enclosure you give them it will never compare to their natural habitat.
The zoo continually makes public promises and breaks them. If you do not support the cruel confinement of these beautiful animals, demand they live up to their promises and build Hazina her new enclosure.
