"But every person who wanted to adopt an animal that was in any distress, should have been allowed to foster it for three months and if not claimed within that period, a legally watertight fostering agreement becomes an adoption agreement."

Dear Judy:

That is actually being done, but many rescuers don't understand the procedure. Because the front-line personnel don't have the time amid the crisis to supervise individual fostering arrangements, they are relaying animals to major humane societies in lots of 200. The humane societies, safely distant from the hurricanes, are then arranging the fostering.

More than 100 organizations are involved on the front lines, and probably 500 are participating in the fostering program.

"The description of the posh conditions for VIPs is familiar.

But also not accurate, in this case. Several HSUS vice presidents who make more money than God were bivouaced in narrow mobile home bunk beds amid the heat, bugs, & shared showers at Lamar-Dixon when I was there last wee, and line staff mostly slept in whatever they brought--mobile home, tent, just their cars.

Actually, this was the first time in all the years that I've covered humane work that I saw the bigwigs living like the grunts and working with their own two hands.

Cheers,
