Stray dogs in Jerusalem to get five-star pound

JERUSALEM – Stray dogs in Jerusalem will soon be pampered in a deluxe municipal dog house, complete with air-conditioned kennels, a swimming pool, garden and panoramic view of the holy city, according to a newspaper report.

Staff will serve up three meals a day to boarders at the establishment, which the leading Yediot Aharonot newspaper compared to a five-star hotel, with handlers ready to welcome visitors eager to adopt a pet.

“Animals, particularly those that have suffered on the street, also have the right to quality living,” Jerusalem’s ultra-Orthodox Jewish mayor, Uri Lupolianski, was quoting as saying by the newspaper.

The kennels, which could house around 100 dogs, are likely to cost the equivalent of $2.6 million to build, with the money set to come from private donors, Yediot said.
